What is a ‘case’ in psychology?
A
To provide a detailed and in-depth analysis of an ind., group, institution or event.

What is a case study?
A
Often involve analysis of unusual ind.s or events but may also concentrate on more ‘typical’ cases.
Usually involves the production of qualitative data. Researchers construct a case history of ind. using interviews, observations, questionnaires.
May also involve experimental or psychological testing to assess what ind. is capable of - quantitative data.
Tend to be longitudinal and may get data from fam. and friends.

What are the strengths of case studies?
A
- Rich and detailed insights into unusual and atypical forms of beh.
- Contribute to our understanding of ‘normal’ functioning
- May generate hypotheses for future studies - could lead to revision of an entire theory

What are the limitations of case studies?
A
- Can’t generalise due to small samples
- Info that makes final report based on subjective selection and interpretation by researcher
- Personal accounts could be fake or subject to inaccuracy or memory decay - lack validity
