Rivers KQ2 Flashcards
Define a “watershed”?
Separation between adjacent drainage basin.
Define a “river basin”?
Catchment area within which water is supplied by precipitation or by underground sources is transferred out via stream.
Name some human activities on the river Nile?
Tourism - boats Barges - trade and transportation Road - transportation Residential activity Agriculture
What do humans use river basins for?
Water supply Industry Residential Agriculture Transport Power Recreation Flood defence Conservation
What are the land uses in the upper course in the Nile?
Tourism
Farming - sheep/deer
Reservoirs
HEP
What are the land uses in the middle course of the river Nile?
Settlements Farming Tourism Angling Transport
What are the land uses in the lower course of the rive Nile?
Settlement
Farming - crops
Transport
Industry
Name some conflicts of the river Nile?
Between land use and humans - building of the Aswan Dam has prevented flooding but deprived the areas after the dam of silt which helps act as a fertiliser)
How is the river Nile a multi-use resource?
Drinkin, bathing and washing dishes
Irrigating crops
Transporting people and goods
HEP
Opportunities for recreation, leisure and tourism
Providing habitats for plants and animals
What is the reasoning for the land uses in the upper course of the Nile?
Natural - waterfalls
Poor soils = animal farming
High rainfall provides supply for resevoirs
What is the reasoning for the land uses in the middle course of the river?
Cheap flat land for settlements and industry
Better quality soils
Transport is easier on flat land
What is the reasoning for the land uses in the lower course of the river?
Rich and fertile land
Wide flat valley floor
What were the effects of the creation of the Lake Nasser Aswan High dam?
Sedimentation causes a reduction in the dam capacity as it builds up at the dam.
Loss of fertility soils downstream due to the lack of silt - meaning artificial fertilisers are used causing chemical pollution.
Erosion of Nile delta meaning that the sediment is no longer reaching the the delta to replace the eroding soils.
Standing water provides breeding ground for paracites.
Reduced water flows down stream lead to higher evaporation rates leaving salinisation and decrease in crop yields.
Fresh water ecosystems invaded by salt water near the delta.
What is the Sudan Gezira Scheme?
A irrigation scheme to help the land that has been affected by droughts or dams being built further upstream.
Name some human activities on the Severn?
Bristol docks
Residential sites like Coventry and Worchester
80% of basin land used for forestry and agricultue
Ferries and bridges
HEP at Clywedog
Pleasure boats and canoeing
Flood defences at Shrewsbury and Tewksbury
15 conservation areas and 11 Nature reserves
