Coasts KQ2 Flashcards
State physical reasons for why the North Norfolk coastline needs protection?
There is a eustatic rise is sea level. Also a isostatic rise in Scotland meaning the south and east are sinking.
Global warming affecting the low lying coast.
Cliffs are made from boulder clay (not very resistant) so the coastline is very susceptible to sub-aerial processes and marine erosion.
North sea storm surges are going to become more frequent.
Bird breeding and conservation sites on the coast.
67km of coastal defences have to be maintained as well as the creation of new ones.
State some social reasons why the North Norfolk coastline needs protection?
Erosion taking place near roads and settlements.
The sand dunes protect the lower lying land behind in the Norfolk Broads.
The rural areas need to be protected as it is many peoples income.
State economic reasons for the North Norfolk coastline needing? protection
The bird breeding and conservation bring in income through visitors of the centres.
Recreational value from east midlands and london.
The local sectors of agriculture need to be protected as its a large quantity of the population.
The Bacton gas terminal provides many jobs - protection needed.
Why are there such pressures to protect the North Norfolk Coastline?
Offshore sandbanks may become damaged and not be able to protect the land behind.
Sea level rise flooding areas like Hunstanton, Winterton and Bacton and in doing so damage historical and archaeological sites.
Inland agriculture may be ruined and species of animals and plants destroyed.
Explain sediment cells?
Sediment cells is a length of coastline that once protected should not affect any other cells along the coastline.
Examples of hard engineering strategies?
Sea walls
Groynes
Gabions
Rock armour
Examples of soft engineering strategies?
Beach nourishment
Managed retreat - letting the coastal area flood it allows the creation of salt marshes which can protect the land behind.
