Rivers Flashcards
Physical cause 1:
Spring snow melt
Ganges & Brahmaputra both rise in Himalaya mountain. High mountains cause wet climates
6,000m peaks - precipitation falls as snow
April & May snowmelt (rising temperatures) release big capacities of water and silt down the 2,500km Long river channels - they overtop river banks
Physical cause 2:
Monsoon rain
Intense and prolonged rainfall monsoon between June and September (South East)
Sheer volume of rain could cause a flood alone
Six months of summer - 1250-1850mm of rainfall
Human cause 1:
Management techniques
Farraka Dam - increased flood risk. Holds back water during dry season, releases huge surges of flow during wet season, channel cannot accommodate.
Raising levees extended flood season in places - prevented water draining back into river for several months
