Q

What is a current example of predictability?

A
  • Packaged tours: avoid surprises abroad, meet new people (societal need), cheaper (mass produced)
  • Lonely planet: same inspiration, so everyone has the same experience

Q

What is New public management?

A

Market rationale and government rationale. We need to be efficient with the resources the government has. You need to have an overview to know where resources are draining and where they are gaining.

Q

What is a current example of calculability?

A

Home care protocol: In home care you only have a certain number of minutes for a certain task. When it takes you longer you have a problem. No time to talk, just provide the service.

Q

What does Non-human technology mean according to Ritzer?

A

Human resources are replaces with non-human technology.

Ritzer: People act in unpredictable ways. There’re limits to rationalizing human behaviour.

It can cure and fill the gap, but it can also cause problems when workers are still available (people lose their job)

Health care: We are struggling to find health care professionals so we can replace it with non-human technology.
In Japan since the 1980s: Aging population, so technology companies take over.

Q

What is a current example of control?

A

Name of worker on the receipt.

Problem: If it doesn’t match with the costumer doesn’t mean it’s necessarily bad.

17
Q

What is the problem with rationalization according to Ritzer?

A

Rationalization can lead to bleak and uninteresting places. A rational system might not be a reasonable system:

  • Dehumanization
  • Disenchantment
  • Other negative effects (not so nourishing food)
18
Q

Why is rationalization not necessarily bad according to Salemink?

A

For example Wetherspoons. They buy up old buildings and turn it into pubs. This means more livability and cheap for Wetherspoons. But it also means bad food and alcohol, so it’s not good for health.

Rationalization also means things get new meaning. Statues are meeting points for Deliveroo employees. Also link to Jane Jacobs: Eyes on the street.
