Indication
Schizophrenia
Mechanism of Action
Selectively blocks serotonin and dopamine receptors in the mesocortical tract of the CNS.
Contraindications
-Hypersensitivity
-Avoid alcohol
Interactions
Antihypertensive medications-increased effects
Carbamazepine, phenobarbital, phenytoin, rifampin-increased risperidone clearance
CNS-additive effect
Dopamine agonists
Side Effects
CNS: abnormal coordination, akathisia, confusion, decreased concentration, drooling, dystonia, sleepwalking, TD
CV: palpitations, elevated triglycerides, hypercholesterolemia, orthostatic hypotension
EENT: dry mouth, ear pain, epistaxis, taste alterations, vision changes
ENDO: glucose abnormalities, SIADH
GI: abdominal pain, anorexia, N/V
GU: decreased libido, ejaculatory disorders, priapism, urinary dysfunction
HEME: anemia
MS: myalgia
RESP: dyspnea
SKIN: alopecia, eczema, photosensitivity
Other: flu-like symptoms, weight gain or loss
Life-threatening SE
CNS: hypothermia, neuroleptic malignant syndrome, seizures
CV: atrial fibrillation, bradycardia, cardio-pulmonary arrest, A-V block, Q-T prolongation
ENDO: DKA
GI: intestinal obstruction, pancreatitis
HEME: agranulocytosis, bone marrow suppression, TTP
RESP: PE, sleep apnea
Other: anaphylaxis, angioedema
