Mechanism of Action
May block postsynaptic dopamine receptors in the limbic system and increase brain turnover of dopamine
Contraindication
Hypersensitivity, Avoid alcohol, Dementia with Lewy bodies
Interaction
Alprazolam, buspirone, chlorpromazine, fluoxetine, promethazine, venlafaxine, increase-plasma haloperidol
Benztropine-decreases haloperidol & TD can develop.
Side Effects
CNS: agitation, confusion,
CV: hypertension, orthostatic hypotension
EENT: blurred vision, dry mouth
ENDO: breast discomfort, engorgement
GI: cholestasis, N/V
GU: decreased libido, ejaculatory disorder, priapism
HEME: anemia
SKIN: acne, photosensitivity
Other: weight gain or loss
Life-threatening SE
CNS: extrapyramidal reactions (may be irreversible), hypothermia, neuroleptic malignant syndrome, seizures
CV: cardiac arrest, QT prolongation, Torsades de point
EENT: laryngeal edema
GI: hepatitis
HEME: agranulocytosis, bone marrow suppression
MS: rhabdomyolysis
SKIN: exfoliative dermatitis
Other: anaphylaxis, angioedema, heatstroke
