Q

Reasons to maintain a program

A
  1. Monitor vector pops in areas where people are at risk of exposures
  2. Monitor for vector-borne and zoonotic disease presence in an area
  3. reduce pesticide use
  4. Control measure effects
  5. New threat, introduced vector, natural/man-made disaster

Q

What does the AFI 48-102 primarily state for DoD’s IPM Program?

A

1) Maintain baseline data on vectors and medically important pests
2) Maintain war readiness core competency skills
3) evaluate efficacy of pest management control efforts

Q

What is the purpose of risk-based surveillance?

A

Create a risk estimate that describes how likely it is that a person will be exposed to a disease vector.
Incorporates critical thinking as a main component

Q

Why is risk based surveillance necessary?

A

*Control recommendations
*Risk communication to base population
*Site selection
Vector surveillance does NOT equal mosquito trapping

Q

What are the 6 steps of risk-based surveillance?

A

1) Start with your risk/ID primary vector and zoonotic disease at your installation
2) ID geographically important vectors involved in the transmission of disease to humans
3) Determine appropriate sampling method(s) for your vector(s) of interest
4) Choose your sampling locations
5) Decide how frequent and for what duration to sample
6) Put together a risk-estimate for leadership
