  • Paul Van Hindenburg was the president of Germany.
  • He appoints and dismisses the chancellor.
  • He can dismiss the Reichstag and call new elections.
  • He can override the Reichstag if there is an emergency.
  • Article 48 of the constitution allowed the President, under certain circumstances, to take emergency measures without the prior consent of the Reichstag.

  • Hindenburg and Franz Von Papen came up with a plan to get the Nazi’s on their side by offering to make Hitler vice chancellor.
  • He refused and demanded to be made chancellor.
