When did Hitler become chancellor and what did he plan to do?

What is Hitler’s first act as chancellor?
Just 24 hours after taking office, Hitler had called for new elections to be held on 5 March 1933. He felt that new elections would not only increase the Nazi share of the vote, but also increase his own status within the country.
What happened 1 week before the election?
- On the 27th February 1933 the Reichstag was set alight.
- The Reichstag fire was an arson attack on the Reichstag building in Berlin, one month after Adolf Hitler was sworn in as Chancellor of Germany.
Who claimed to have started the fire?
Marinus van der Lubbe, a Dutch communist tried, convicted and executed for setting fire to the German Reichstag building.
Who did the Germans think began the fire?
The communists, as they were afraid of them.
Who was it most likely that caused the fire?
- The Nazi’s.
- They needed to somehow blame the communists to gain more votes and to decrease the number of votes received by the communists.
The day after the Reichstag fire, Hitler published a new law through Article 48. What was it?
- Decree for the protection of people and state.
- This was a law that meant Hitler was able to jail anyone without trail.
What was Hitler now able to do after the Reichstag fire?
- All communist meetings banned.
- Communist papers closed down.
- SA became police.

Fear, violence and corruption.

Nazis increased their share of the vote to 43.9 per cent, but they still had not achieved the majority that would enable them to form a government.
