What we’re the two countries who were affected by the Wall Street the most?
America and Germany (Germany was the most reliant on American loans)
Why did America recall it’s loans?
The banks were crashing and wanted back the loans to help cushion the affects of the crash on America’s own banks and businesses.
Who suffered the most in Germany?
- Everybody suffered but the class that felt it the most was the working class.
- 40% of all factory workers were unemployed by 1932.
- People were prepared to sell anything for anything
Effects on the Germans from the Great Depression
Many became homeless because they couldn’t afford the rent and they began to rely on charity.
What was the problem with the Weimar Republic?
- It was only popular when things were good.
- People remembered the bad times.
- Coalitions began to break down (Stresemann was dead).
- The government only made weak or no decisions due to proportional representation
Why did many Germans believe that Hitler had the answer?
- He promised work and food.
- Nazis promised to sort out the danger of the communists.
- He was a strong leader.
- Democracy was weak.
What did Joseph Goebbels do for the Nazi’s?
- He made a deal with a nationalist cinema chain owner and posters were displayed everywhere.
- Nazi newspapers were also displayed everywhere.
What did the Nazi’s hold to gain more support?
They held rallies.
Was the Great Depression the only reason for the Nazi’s success?
No, but it was a catalyst and it did contribute to Hitler’s success.
Did Hitler gain power through elections?
No. He gained it through circumstances.
