What led to the failure of the weimar republic?
Political causes: treaty of v, november criminals, stabbed in the back, proportional representation, outbreaks of violence against the weimar reupblic (spartacist, the kapp pustch, series of assasinations, the beer hall putsch), armies expanded.
Economic problems: war expanses, reparations, occupation of rurh, loans from the US
What made the Nazis popular
Promised to get rid of communism, nov criminals and the stab in the back myth, diff bw weimar and nazis, SA appealed to the youth, Hitlers charisma, promised to overthrow TOV

Why did they make him chancellor?
- they were apprehensive and thought hitler would seize power putsch
- they could control hotel if he was in the government and once nazis got a taste power they wouldn’t be so extremists.
- it would give the nationalist majority and would help them get rid of communism.

Dutch communist, Marinus Van Der Lubbe
What was the Enabling Law?
March 23rd 1933. Would give hitler dictatorial power on a legal basis and would make him dic for next four years. Laws wouldn’t have to be passed with the approval reichstag
What was Hitlers policy?
Gleichshaltung which made Germany a totalitarian state

- Toalitarian state, only nationalist one state party, trade unions abolished instead German Labour fronts, education was supervised, so was media and television, religion was under state control, police state, concentration camps
What made his policies popular amongst the people
- Antcipation after the weimar republic which was upheld by rallies in NUrmeberg.
- Abolished unemplyment. Burecracy ecpanded which provided new jobs and and jobs were free from jews.
- He helped the workers with the strenght through joy foundation
- Welathy industrialists felt free from communism
- Farmers felt favoured because of the self sufficiency drive.
- He gained the support of the army
What was the night of the long knives?
Ernest Rohm, the leader of the SA waned the SA to merge with the army with him as the leader. Hitler knew this wouldn’t work bc the army cinsdiered the SA gangsters. Rohm was persisitent so Hitler used his ss troops to kill rohm and other sa troops. 400 people were killed that day.
