The indigo rebellion or the neel bidrodho which took place in the Nadia district of Bengal in 1859 to 1820 was a revolt done by the Indian farmers against European planters who were forced to grow indigo under unfavorable conditions.

The indigo revolt was largely non violent which acted as precursor of Gandhi’s satygraha policy. It also led to the government creating the indigo commission in 1860
