1871- germany used to be a patchwork of ministates. in 1871, prussia, th most powerful german state forced most its neighbors to join a prussian dominated german empire. and it lost most of its t erritory after WWI
1930s, the nazis claimed that all german speaking parts of europe constituted one nationality and should be unified in one state
after WWII, germany was split in two until 1990
