Where criminologists should work with govt to develop particle solutions, if we should be taken seriously of the widespread public fear of crime
What is right realism?
Associated with the right wing neoliberalism side of government
M Thatcher (1979) came to power and spread this ideology
What is neoliberal?
A faith in capitalism and minimal state interfering in the economy
What are the 3 main causes of crime?
-Biological/psychological reasons
-Inadequate socialisation
-Rational choice
Biological cause- Wilson and Herrnstein?
Believe that some people are innately more predisposed to crim than others
Due to personality traits
Biological cause- Herrnstein and Murray?
Low intelligence so biologically determined to commit crime
Biological cause- criticism?
Deterministic (not all people with disorders commit crime)
-Not all crimes committed by unintelligent people w/c white collar crime
Inadequate socialisation- Murry blames the underclass, who are these?
People defined by their deviant behaviour and those failing to socialise children
Inadequate socialisation- What is the increasing welfare dependency?
People relying on welfare state to survive
More lone parents as they can live on benefits
Men not working as they don’t have to provide for family if on benefits
Inadequate socialisation- Murry why are lone mothers inadequate for socialisation?
Boys have no male figure so reject female values trying to find crime in gangs to gain status and support family’s
Inadequate socialisation- criticism Jane Mooney?
Shouldn’t blame lone parents, more likely to be victims
