Why has the media changed its crime focus since 1960’s?
Used to focus on murder and petty crime but due to abolition of death penalty and rising crime rates it has to be special to raise attention
Now focus on moral panics
How does coverage of rape distort the true nature of crime?
Focuses on attacker being a stranger when in reality its most likely to be a partner and people we know
CRITIC- feminists say we have to address patriarchy and misogyny, cant just blame individuals
What are news values?
The criteria by which journalists and editors decide weathers story’s are newsworthy to make it to news (gatekeepers decide)
