right realism on crime Flashcards
views
-crime isn’t just smth that’s created/ labelled by sociologists but its a real problem that needs to be solved
-think that victims are often ignored and that fear of crime is increasing
-causes of crime: biological differences, inadequate socialisation, rational choice
-NR view
govt approach to crime
-favoured reducing welfare and having a strong commitment to law & order
-wanted a ‘get tough’ stance on crime with increased use of prison and a ‘short, sharp shock’ approach for young offenders
-zero tolerance
value and consensus
-shared morality underpins society, criminals are immoral bc they break shared morals. Social order is crucial & ppl shouldn’t live in fear
natural selfishness
ppl have a natural tendency to take shortcuts by committing crime
community control
poor socialisation and lack of community control that lies behind crime/ anti-social behaviour. The most effective crime control is strengthening the bonds of the community, strict socialisation through family and educational pressure
Murray
-crime due to an underclass characterised by welfare dependency & lack of responsibility/ authority
-crime is due to dysfunctional family life and failure to socialise/ control children
-lack of community pressure to control deviance
wilson
-ppl use rational choice to weigh up costs & benefits before acting. Ppl commit crime bc the benefits are greater than the costs
-we should reduce opportunity to commit crime, and increase the costs e.g. heavier policing
crime will always exist
-some ppl will always have natural selfishness and it’s a waste of time trying to find the social causes of crime
-most that can be done is to reduce the impact of crime on victims (esp violence & burgulary)
-white collar crime has little impact on individuals thus shouldn’t be a major focus
Wilson and kelling
-broken window theory
-if a single window breaks and isn’t repaired, the entire area deteriorates and law-abiding citizens won’t feel safe
-police to focus on areas deteriorating and use zero tolerance policy rather than focusing only on serious offences. Focus on minor offences before they escalate
Cohen & Felson
-crime needs 3 conditions:
>motivation
>opportunity
>no capable guardian
right realism’s influence
-UK & USA have both used zero tolerance policies e.g. UK Criminal Behaviour Orders and Crime Prevention Injunctions since 2012
-Due to harsher sentences there has been rising prison populations
Jones
-factors e.g. lack of investment are important in decline of neighbourhoods
-attention on minor offences might mean serious offenders get away
-etv of broken window
Leah and Young
-right realist policing policies are militaristic where police act as an invading army
-this antagonises and marginalises the community increasing crime
katz
thrill of crime is important in explaining crime, particularly those with no material benefits
