Riesling Flashcards
jj plum
by Joe Czerwinski
Like many of the J.J. Prüm wines, this one starts off funky smelling, with hints of sweaty socks. But those aromas aren’t enough to conceal the underlying notes of apple, citrus and vanilla; decant the wine if you intend to drink it during the next five years or so. It’s plump and custardy in texture, with a long, pineappley finish.
trimbach alsace
the wine ages, it shows a soft, toasty and nutty side that adds complexity to the tight fruitiness that remains. It’s a wine in transition, still fresh while adding some concentration, broadening the steely texture and giving hints of the serious wine it will be. Drink from 2018.
domaine roland
by Roger Voss
So elegant, a wine with just a fine balance. It has creamy apple fruit flavors, hedgerow fruits, with a line of crisp acidity to cut through the fruitiness and give a more mineral edge. It will be worth aging this wine for 2–3 years. Drink after 2014.
Leitz Rheingau
For a vineyard the importer characterizes as “adamant,” this wine is surprisingly showy. There’s a strong backbone of lime and green apple, but also sweet hints of apricot and peach. Finishes tart and long, dry enough to appeal to folks who “don’t care for sweet wine.” —J.C.
