purpose of the Royal Charter

A

Allows a body to self regulate.
Written description of the RICS’ powers (e.g. self-regulation) and obligations (e.g. advancement of knowledge, appointment of a Governing Council etc.)
Requires the RICS to develop the profession for the public advantage
Allows members to use the term ‘chartered’ in their job title

Privy Council and the RICS

A

Privy Council - a body set up in the early days of the monarchy to advise the king/queen on matters of state and not put before parliament
Any changes to the bye-laws have to be approved by the UK Government, through the Privy Council, even if the changes have already been approved by a majority vote of RICS members

3. Ethical behaviour - acting with integrity and avoiding conflicts of interest.
4. Competence - work with due skill, care, due diligence and with proper regard for technical standards expected.
5. Service - work in a timely manner with proper regard for standards of service and customer care expected.
6. CPD - comply with RICS requirements for continuing Professional Development.
7. Solvency - ensure that professional and personal finances are managed appropriately.
8. Information - submit in a timely manner such information reasonably required by the Regulatory Body.
9. Cooperation - fully cooperate with RICS staff and any person appointed by the Regulatory Board.

8. Clients’ money - preserve the security of clients’ money entrusted to its care in the course of its business.
9. Professional Indemnity insurance - ensure all previous and current work is covered by adequate insurance.
Part III – Firm Administration
10. Solvency - ensure that its finances are managed appropriately.
11. Information - submit in a timely manner such information reasonably required by the Regulatory Body.
12. Cooperation - fully comply with RICS staff and any person appointed by the Regulatory Board.
13. Advertising - promote professional services in a truthful and responsible manner.
14. Arrangements - to cover incapacity/death of a sole practitioner.
