What are the objectives of the RICS?
“To secure the advancement and facilitate the acquisition of that knowledge which constitutes the profession of a surveyor
Maintain and promote the usefulness of the profession for the public advantage in the United Kingdom and in any other part of the world”
What are the purposes of the RICS?
Advancing and facilitating access to surveying knowledge
Supporting and engaging with a body of skilled professionals and firms
Promoting the usefulness of the profession
Regulating the profession and setting the highest standards
What are the RICS Rules for Members & Firms?
Honesty, Integrity and comply with professional obligations (including those to the RICS)
Maintain competence, ensure services are provided by competent individuals with necessary expertise
Good quality and diligent service.
Treat others with respect, and promote diversity & inclusion
Act in the public interest, take responsibility and act to prevent harm and maintain public trust.

What are members obligations to the RICS?
MUST comply with CPD Obligations
MUST cooperate with RICS
MUST promptly provide information reasonably requested by Standards and Regulations Board (or those acting on it’s behalf)
What are Firms obligations to the RICS
- Public Complaints Handling Procedure
- Previous and current work covered by adequate PI cover
- Sole principal must make arrangements for work to continue in event of death, abesne, or other inability to work.
- Must cooperate with RICS
- Promptly provide all information requested by Standards / Regulations Board
- Must displated designations on business literature (RICS Regulated)
- Must Report any matters due to report to RICS under Rules for the Registration of Firms.
What are the rules for RICS Registration of Firms?
- Required to register is 50% of principals are members (25% for eligibility)
- Terms for registration (Make application for registration)
- Designate Responsible Principal to take all reasonable steps to ensure firm complies with standards & obligations.
- Must pay appropriate annual fees
What is the RICS Disciplinary Procedure?
Fixed Penalty Notice for (Caution First Breach, Caution & Fine second in 10 years):
Breach of CPD Requirement
Failure to provide information to RICS
Failure to Pay fees (firms)
Regulatory Compliance Order (fine of up to £2k/breach:
Agreement between RICS and Member/Firm that they are liable for disciplinary action
Member accepts fallen short, accepts proposed sanction, accepts steps to be taken.
