What were the three classes?
Upper, Middle, Working classes
What do these diff classes reflect?
his/her economic role within society and opportunities that result from it
Upper class:
- status from family background and wealth created from ownership of areas of land farmed by others.
- dominated European political life
- wealth from work of others
Upper class: what did they enjoy and how did they exhibit their wealth?
- members enjoyed high status, prestige and influence that didn’t reflect talent/ability.
- exhibited wealth through grand houses, servants, vacations, leisure pursuits, expensive clothes, access to education (private and tertiary)
Middle class:
- ppl involved in development and control of industries and commercial ventures, and those in professions such as law/medicine.
- wealth/influence from own effort and work then family connections
- similar lifestyle of upper class, edu and political and social influence
Lower class: what are the two types?
rural or urban
What did the working class and provide and struggle with?
- provided labour of those who controlled nation’s resources
- endured low wages and inadequate living conditions
- (family) struggle for survival
- edu limited as need to contribute to family income
What is the cause of poverty in countryside/rural?
poverty from seasonal nature of available work
Urban working class life:
- lived in crowded conditions, sometimes 30 ppl in room
- often, family with house lease will sublet space as cant afford to pay rent
- privacy difficult to obtain, living condition unsanitary and disease common
What did other classes feel of working class?
felt they deserved this fate and were lazy, undeserving and dishonest.
Why was poverty cycle hard to break?
poor have low wages and few edu. opportunities, hard to break cycle
