- undermined existing religious, cultural and political structures that once created sense of unity among a colony’s indigenous ppl, and disrupted their ongoing development
- increased gap between wealth and power of ruling nation and of nations it governed
- displaces colonial ppl, forced to work as cheap labour
- imperialism and global interaction laid foundation for globalisation

A
- established empires that had either reached or passed height of powers required expensive infrastructure to sustain their colonies.
- indigenous ppl increasingly challenge control and exploitation of their lives and territory

A
faced challenge within colonies (esp India), ppl became vocal in demands for self-determination

A
enjoyed benefits of raw materials and cheap labour, but empire undermined France’s economic strength
- Indochinese colonies needed large military expenditure to maintain French authority over groups demanding independence.

COlonal power: Austria- Hungary empire
A
50% of population that were Magyars (neither Austrian or HUngarian) gained growing awareness of own cultural identities = demand independence
as this nationalism strengthened, Austria-Hungary became harder to govern
