What are polymyositis and dermatomyositis?

A

Polymyositis is an idiopathic myopathy than causes symmetrical proximal muscle weakness. Dermatomyositis is similar but also has cutaneous manifestations

How do patients with polymyositis/dermatomyositis present?

A

Symmetrical, proximal muscle weakness in the upper and lower extermities
Dysphagic can occur
Interstitial lung disease

How do you diagnose polymyositis/dermatomyositis?

A

Raised inflammatory markers
High CK
Autoantibodies ANA, Anti Jo1 and SRP
Muscle biopsy - shows signs of inflammation, necrosis and regeneraton

A

Steroids

Methotrexate/Azathioprine
