rheumatic heart disease Flashcards
what is rheumatic heart disease
an inflammatory condition caused by a group A streptococci infection which causes damage to the heart valves
what medications are used to treat rheumatic heart disease
- antibiotics
- aspirin, steroids or non steroidal medications are used to treat inflammation
- surgery may be necessary to repair or replace the damaged valve
what are the issues with rheumatic heart disease
The heart valves can be inflamed and become scarred over time. This can result in narrowing or leaking of the heart valve making it harder for the heart to function normally. The heart is unable to pump blood effectively. This may take years to develop and can result in heart failure.
other complications include infection of damaged heart valves and stroke due to clots forming in the enlarged heart or on damaged valves. It can also lead to heart failure as it disrupts blood flow.
