Derives from the thorn that often develops between two terminal buds at branch ends
Where would you most typically find common buckthorn?
Upland areas, oak woodlands
Where would you most typically find glossy buckthorn (Frangula alnus)?
Wetland areas
What’s the difference between the terminal bud of the two buckthorns?
Glossy buckthorn’s is “naked” and pubescent. Common buckthorn’s is sharp and between two horns.
What is it about the fruiting characteristics of glossy buckthorn that might lead to it’s success as an invader?
Ripens continuously through summer with seeds dispersed by birds.
What are the two members of the rhamnaceae family that are native to MN?
Ceanothus americanus (New Jersey Tea), C. herbaceus (Narrow-leaved New Jersey Tea)
