What family is the Berberidaceae?
Barberry family
Key features:
- commonly have spines (on stem and leaf tips)
- shoot tissue is often yellow (from compound called berberine)
- ## flowers generally in 3 or 6 parts
No woody berberidaceae native to MN, why are we studying this family?
There are some that are important from a horticulturist perspective
Why is barberry a popular landscaping plant?
- Good ground cover and drought tolerant!
- Good for hedges / separation / barrier
Why is mayapple inappropriately named?
It’s not an apple! Also it’s poisonous!
Where would you recommend planting Epimedium?
In Minnesota? Zone 4
Anything good about a barberry fruit?
Edible and can be made into jams and jellies!
What is the problem with evergreen plants when grown in an environment like we have in Minnesota?
- Winter scorch, if the ground is dry or frozen the leaves dry and scorch
What is something that might tip you off a plant is invasive?
Bright berries that birds like to eat, cause they shit the seeds out everywhere
