RH Factor Flashcards
We are concerned about Rh compatability if pregnant person is Rh____ and fetus is Rh _____
Preggo-
Baby +
First time we would give RhoGAM during a pregnancy? why?
28 weeks (IV or IM) if preggo is Rh negative –> prevent antibodies from forming against RH+ baby blood
are we concerned if preggo and baby are both Rh -?
No! no need for RhoGAM
If preggo is Rh - and fetus is Rh+ will it effect the current pregnancy?
‣ doesn’t effect 1st preg, but can attack fetus Rh+ blood in future pregnancies
When is the second time we give RhoGAM during pregnancy?
given again within 72 hours after birth if mother is Rh- with a Rh+ baby (dependent on baby blood type–> if baby is Rh- = no RhoGAM after birth for the preggo)
What is RhoGAM?
• RhoGAM stops the preggos immune system from making antibodies against baby’s Rh-positive blood
Complications from Rh?
jaundice and anemia
Special circumstance to admin RhoGAM?
• Given with procedure or trauma where baby’s blood is at risk of entering mom’s blood
Post admin considerations for RhoGAM?
• Observe for 20 minutes after Admin to watch for allergic reaction
• can interfere with immune response to live vaccines
◦ if give RhoGAM no live vaccines for 3 months
Rhogam does to mix with live _____
vaccines!
◦ if give RhoGAM no live vaccines for 3 months
Test for detecting Rh Antibodies?
Coombs
Direct vs indirect coombs test?
Indirect coombs test
• Detects Rh+ antibodies in the mother’s blood
Direct coombs test
• Measure the presence of maternal antibodies in the newborn’s blood
If you do an indirect coombs test and see that preggo is Rh- and baby is Rh+ what do you do?
notify pediatrician
