rewards and probability of sucess Flashcards
what is prinicple 2.1
in addition to basic survival needs, humans also tend to seek out feelings of autonomy, belonging and competence
basic needs
food water partners,
we evolved to detect sugar and get internally rewarded for finding it
supernomal stimuli
eg: cake not an apple
can also be beauty standards - non natural
supernormal stimuli and birds
- birds prefer large eggs
- geese prefered large fale eggs
- even if it was a volleyball
most indviduals have evolved to
seek out certain stimuli that are evolutionaryily necessary for survival of species
- some nuances apply tho eg: asexual
supernormal stimuli do what?
hijack evolved cravings and we find the pursuit of them rewarding even if they oversatify the need or provide a flase fulfillment of that need
Extrinsic motivators
engaging in an activity to recieve an outcome related to that activity and for the satisfaction offered by that outcome
intrinsic motivation
enaging in an activity for the sake of the activity itself nd for the satisfaction inherent to it
two factors to every reward
informational aspect : feedback
controlling aspect : external vs internal
puzzles and punishments study
do extrinsic motivators impact peoples choice of activity when the extrinsic motivator isn’t present?
- methods : participants solve puzzles -10 mins per puzles, after 4 experiementor leaves the room and participant can do whatever
- intrinsic motivation is measured by how long people play with the puzzle in their free time
self determination theory
people have a core need of reaching
1. autonomy :independence and meaningful decisions
2. competence : feeling like they meet some personal standard or desired performance outcome
3. Belonging/relatedness :feeling a sense of connectedness to other people
the intrinsic motivation is then linked to the degree..
to which these needs - autonomy, competence, belonging- can be met by enaging in an activity
why kids play sports?
top reason: fun, friends skills, not winning
drop out because : overemphasis on winning, not getting to play, boredom
applying self determination theory
coworker gets aggressive when you point out a flaw
people who wore masks but opposed mandates
manager hosts an awkward party at work
self efficacy
not confidence and self esteem
- situational belief that you can successfully plan and perform specific skills to produce a particular desired outcome
self-efficacy is more situational while confidence is more general and self esteem is not tied to abilities
you can high confience and low self efficacy
