Revision UNIT 1 P2 Flashcards
What is adaptive plasticity?
The ability to learn new information or skills, and is generally enhanced in young people.
What is neuroplasticity?
The ability of the brain to change structurally and functionally in response to experience
Experience-EXPECTANT plasticity?
Involves brain change in response to environmental experience that is ordinarily expected, an example is language.
Experience-DEPENDENT plasticity?
Involves brain change that modifies some part of its neuronal structure that is already present, an example is the development of reading skills.
What is sprouting?
The ability of a neuron to develop new branches on the dendrites or axons. Expands the reach of a neuron, particularly when the neuron has been damaged, enabling new neural connections.
What is rerouting?
The neuron’s ability to form a new connection with another undamaged neuron.
Developmental plasticity?
Changes in the brain that occur in response to ageing and maturation.
Synaptogenesis?
The formation of synapses between neurons as axon terminals and dendrites grow.
Synaptic pruning?
The elimination of underused synapses.
Myelination?
The formation and development of myelin around the axon of a neuron.
ABI?
Brain damage caused after birth
How could an ABI impact someone biologically?
Changes to the function of organs and neurons
How could an ABI impact someone psychologically?
Changes to a person’s thoughts, feelings, and behaviour.
How could an ABI impact someone socially?
Changes to a person’s interpersonal skills and interactions with other people.
What is a PET scan?
Records levels of activity in different brain areas while participant engages in a mental or low-level physical task.
B: identifying function and specific brain activity in specific brain part
L: radioactive substance injected
