How was the Church revitalised in 1049?
Emperor Henry III and the reforming Popes created a stronger church based on:
- A central church authority with a Pope as the head.
- A common set of beliefs.
- A desire to expand the influence of the Western Church.
Who was Pope Gregory VII (1073-1085)
The last of the reforming Popes who was part of the delegation of Constantinople which resulted in the Great Schism of 1054. He saw it as his mission to restore the church to a position of supreme authority.
What was the conflict between Henry IV and Pope Gregory VII and how did it begin?
They disagreed over who had more authority - Henry appointed a new archbishop without consulting Gregory which led to his excommunication in 1075. A rebellion led to him asking for forgiveness in 1077.
How did this conflict escalate?
When Gregory became unpopular with the people of Rome and the Church, Henry IV forced him out of Rome in 1084 and appointed Pope Clement III to replace him.
How did the Great Schism occur?
Gregory was delegated to try and start a campaign to unite the Western and Eastern Churches divided since 1054 - his successor Pope Urban II later developed his ideas during the First Crusade.
