The distributive property
a distribution of multiplication through parenthesis.
Ex: 5(9 + 2) = 5 x 9 + 5 x 2
Order of operations
- Parenthesis and brackets
- Exponents
- Multiplication and division from left to right
- Adding and subtracting from left to right
Factored form
Ex: 5(9 + 2)
Expanded form
Ex: 5 x 9 + 5 x 2
Multiplying fractions
Multiply across the top and bottom and simplify.
Dividing fractions
Keep, Switch, Flip. Then multiply across the top and bottom and simplify.
Identity Property of multiplication
Any number times 1 equals the number.
Zero property of multiplication
Any number times zero equals zero.
Multiplying decimals
Ignore the decimals and multiply like normal. Then count the numbers after the decimals and add that number of decimal places.
Dividing decimals
Change the front number to a whole number and do the same to the inside. Then divide like normal.
