Review Moving Straight Ahead part 2 Flashcards
mx + b = y
The equation that all lines that have linear relationship can be written with.
Y-intercept
The point where the line crosses the y-axis. (b)
Coefficient
The number that multiplies a variable in an equation. (m)
Distributive property
distributing the multiplication throughout a set of parenthesis. Ex: 2(x + 2) = 2x + 4
Increasing Slope
The line is increasing if you have a positive unit rate.
Decreasing Slope
The line is decreasing if you have a negative unit rate.
Solving for x
Use opposite operations to move numbers to one side of the equation leaving x equal to a number. Gives you the missing value.
Equivalent expressions
Equations that are equal to each other. 3 + 2 = 1 + 4
Points of intersection
When two lines meet and the two equations are equal to each other. (When finding the points of intersection set the equations equal and solve for x).
Slope
The measure of the steepness of the line. rise/run or y change/x change
Vertical change
The change in the y, up and down. (rise)
Horizontal change
The change in the x, forward and back. (run)
