Reversal Agents Flashcards
1
Q
Neostigmine - Dose/Timing
A
- 0.5-2.5 mg IV
- Onset to peak: 3-7 min
- Duration: 45-60 min
- Should be given with glycopyrrolate
2
Q
Neostigmine - Indications
A
- Anticholinesterase Agent
- Does NOT reverse the neuromuscular blocking agent. It antagonizes the effects of acetylcholinesterase resulting in the increased availability of acetylcholine (ACh) in the neuromuscular junction. When sufficient ACh concentrations are reached the muscle recovers the ability to contract
3
Q
Atropine - Dose/Timing
A
- 0.6-1.2 mg IV
- Onset to peak: 30-90 sec
- Duration - 30-15 min
4
Q
Atropine - Indications
A
- Anticholinergic Agent
- Given to counteract side effects of increased ACh (miosis, bradycardia, bronchospasm, increased secretions) that occurs following the administration of Neostrimine
- May be given in PACU if pt remains bradycardic
5
Q
Atropine - Adverse Effects
A
- Inject rapidly as slow injections may cause paradoxical slowing of the heart rate
- May cause restlessness and tachycardia
6
Q
Glycopyrrolate - Dose/Timing
A
- Onset: 1-2 min
- Peak: 5-15 min
- Duration: 30-45 min
7
Q
Glycopyrrolate - Indications
A
- Anticholinergic Agent
- Given to counteract side effects of increased ACh (miosis, bradycardia, bronchospasm, increased secretions) that occurs following the administration of Neostigmine
8
Q
Glycopyrrolate - Adverse Effects
A
• Dry mouth, constipation, tachycardia, hypotension
