- used for induction, maintenance and conscious sedation
- bronchodilating effect – good in asthmatics
- profound analgesia

A
- hallucinations, anxiety with early stimulation of patient post-op
- ↑ ICP and intraocular pressure
- ↑ oral secretions
- hypertension

A
- maintain quiet environment while patient recovering
- successful use in children with minimal side effects
- related to PCP and LSD (“special K”)
- 3rd line option after opioid and non-opioid analgesics have failed
- “Date Rape” drug

- 1.5 – 3 mg/kg (induction)
- 5 – 50 µg/k g/min (maintenance)
- onset: < 40 seconds
- peak: 1 – 3 minutes
- duration: 3 – 10 minutes

- ongoing management of ventilated patients
- rapidly metabolized without accumulation

- Painful upon injection
- Lowers inhibitions
- Potenti respiratory depressant

- Rapid emergence
- Antiemetic properties
- Reduce dose in elderly
- Not recommended in children <3 yrs
- Avoid in pts with egg allergy
- Strict aseptic technique with infusion
- Plastic is degraded b drug therefore do not use 3 way stopcocks/change tubing q 24 hrs

- Onset: 30-60 seconds
- Duration: 5-10 minutes

- Short-acting barbituate general anesthetic
- 1st degree use with ECTs
- Used to stop seizures in an emergency situation
