Q

Granulocytes

A

BEN

  • Basophils - involved in releasing histamine in immune reactions.
  • Eosinophils - destroys larger parasites and is involved in immune reactions.
  • Neutrophils - phagocytose and engulf invading bacteria.

Q

Aplastic Anemia

A

Disease in which the hematopoietic stem cells of the bone marrow are not working properly. Therefore there will be severely less white and red blood cells. Under microscope it will just look like lipid droplets. Lack of energy makes sense because lack of RBCs. More prone to infection makes sense because lack of WBCs - however there will be no pus. Caused by destruction of uncommitted stem cells.

Q

Till and McColough Experiment

A

You can irradiate the bone marrow cells of a mouse and then inect it with another mouses bone marrow cells and you will see the mouse will live.

Q

Pure red blood cell aplasia

A

When only the red blood cells don’t form. It is a mutation in it’s progenitor.

Q

Cytokines and Interleukins

A

These guys are responsible for telling the stem cell to differentiate and into what. For instance, if one cytokine is expressed perhaps a neutrophil will be made but if a different cytokine is expressed then maybe an eosinophil is made.

Q

What are some specific surface receptors/cytokines for macrophage development

A

Cd34 in myeloid
Cd33 and CD14 in monocyte
- these are all lost once it becomes a macrophage
