Retrieval Failure Due To Absence Of Cues Flashcards

Q

Strength: RTS context dependent forgetting

A

Godden and Baddely, scuba divers given list of words to learn, either on land or in water, asked to recall list in either same setting as learned or opposite, more likely to forget words (40% less accuracy) if tested in opposite setting, supports context dependant forgetting, lack of external memory cues means forgetting is more likely

Q

Strength: RTS state dependant forgetting

A

Goodwin et al, male volunteers asked to learn list of words either drunk or sober, asked to recall words 24 hours later in either same or opposite state, ppts more likely to forget words if tested in opposite state, lack of internal meteors cues means forgetting more likely

Q

Weakness: lacks mundane realism

A

Use of artificial tasks such as learning list of words, difficult to generalise findings to everyday cases of forgetting, learn much more complex information irl such as psychological theories, may not be easily accessed with an internal or external cue, reduces external validity
