Retinal Artery and Vein Occlusions: Sudden Visual Loss Flashcards
What is the presentation of central retinal artery occlusion?
Causes sudden unilateral visual loss
Painless
What is the cause of central retinal artery occlusion?
Due to thromboembolism (from atherosclerosis) or arteritis (temporal arteritis)
What are the signs of central retinal artery occlusion?
Painless, sudden unilateral visual loss
Afferent pupillary defect
‘Cherry red’ spot on a pale retina
What is the presentation of central retinal vein occlusion?
Sudden, painless reduction or loss of visual acuity, usually unilateral
What are the risk factors for central retinal vein occlusion?
Increasing age
Glaucoma
Polycythaemia
What is seen on fundoscopy in central retinal vein occlusion?
Severe retinal haemorrhages
