Retina Overview Flashcards
The retina extends from the __ to the ___
Ora serrata peripherally to the optic disc
Ora serrata
Transition at the peripheral retina and ciliary body. 360 degrees
Canal retina/posterior ple
Purely clinical term with no universal agreement on boundaries.
Roughly means the retina between the superior temporal and inferior temporal arteries.
(superior and inferior arteries branching from the ON)
Optic disc/optic nerve head
Considered part of the posterior pole.
The most anterior portion of the optic nerve.
nasal and slightly superior to the macula.
The optic dis vertical and horizontal disc diameter
Slightly more vertical than horizontal.
Vertical diameter- 1.9mm
Horizontal- 1.7mm
Orange color of the optic disc is due to the
Lamina cribrosa. Which is the fenestrated sclera in the area of the posterior foramen. AKA the scleral canal
Optic cup
Within the optic disc. Yellow/white color.
Depression in the center of the optic nerve.
Varies greatly in size and depth according to development and disease.
Blood vessels enter and exit the eye through the optic cup.
VDD and HDD
Vertical and horizontal disc diameter.
Vertical- 1.9mm
Horizontal- 1.7mm
Equator
Imaginary line that divides the globe equally into anterior and posterior poles. (Vortex veins are posterior to the equator.)
Mid-periphery
Area between posterior pole and equator
Far-periphery/anterior retina
Area anterior to the equator extending to ora serrata.
ora serrata
Termination of the peripheral retina (most anterior portion of the retina) and where the ciliary body begins.
Quadrants are described using what reference point
Retina
Inner vs outer
Inner- inside the globe. Vitreous.
Outer- toward the outside of the globe (sclera)
