French and Indian War (1754/56[offical yearof begining]-1759)

A

Resulted in Treaty of paris 1763
British responce: Stage troops in colonies for saftey (led to acts taxing colonists)
Colony Responce:
realised britatins primary intrest was finance, not them, treated unfiarly, saw the ineffective set peice battle style. Therefore no need for British protection or much else.

A

Plan to strenghthen colonies. FAILED but brought colonies together and became the blueprint for federation in 1776

Sons of Liberty

A

A group through out the revelution. Protested on many things, spread propoganda. Talked alot about the idea of freeedom. Particullary good at boycotts thanks to Daughters of liberty(get to that later)

A

Female equivelent of sons of liberty, enabled boycotting by making clothes, tea substitutes and repaired clothing.

Letters from a farmer 1767-68

A

Jhon Dickinson. Anonnymously published,influential letter posing as a farmer. Argued that Britain had teh power to manage external affairs but not internal matters such as tax and regulate colonies.

Seizure of the ‘Liberty’ (1768)

A

Ship owned by Jhon Hancock. Customs insited that Townshend duties be paid, got locked up by ships captain. Ship seized next morning, customs was beat up by mob growing anti-british sentiment in Hancock

Massachusetts circular letter (1768)

A

Samuel Adam wrote it. Claimed Townshend duties were unconstitutional. Massachusettes endorsed letter and circulated it to other colonies. Britain desolves massachusettes assembly. Led to mob violence.

A

resulted in 5 dead. used as propaganda “massacare” when only 5 dead. Paul Revere’s famous engraving.

Boston Tea Party (1773)

A

Tea is only item left that is covered by the townshend duties. Colonists dressed as Native americans Dump 342 chests of tea into Boston Harbour as it wasn’t unloaded there was no need for tax to be paid. One of the Early shows of Open, Overt defience.

A

Didn’t do much, critisized boston saying it was their fault. agreed to continue boycotts.

Second Continental Congress 1775

A

Formed continental army, Washington as First comander in cheif. stayed in session over the war. UNified colonies because Washington was chosen to lead the army as a southerner by a northener so it wasn’t just an issue for the north.

Olive Branch Petition 1775

A

Petition to George III for a peaceful reselution as war was inoptimal. Viewed as conflicting by George III as it was critical but pledged loyalty. Rejected and gave the coloniial congress a choice, war or Hang.

A

Secong congress established a state government rather than assemblies. Gave power to the people and each state their own constitution.

The Declaration of Independence (July 1776)

A

Drafted by Jefferson, Congress changed much of it. Colonies called them selves states. Introduced by Richard Henery Lee. Lee’s motion passed July 2nd, actual Declaration passed on the 4th of july.
