Steering Failure: Initial Actions
Engage Manual Steering / Alternative steering system / Emergency Override tiller to regain rudder control
Stop steering pump(s) and then start the alternative pump(s)
Reduce speed and determine position of rudders
Inform and maintain communications with Engine Control Room
Inform Master, additional officers and helmsman
Steering Failure: Subsequent Actions
Arrange for manning of emergency steering position
Close watertight doors
Establish communication with emergency steering
position and verify gyros aligned
Engage emergency steering if necessary
Establish proximity of navigational hazards and verify traffic situation
Prepare for anchoring if water depth and conditions are appropriate
Modify AIS
Inform VTS or port authority, as appropriate
Not Under Command lights, shapes and sound signals, as appropriate
Maintain log/record of events and decisions
