Respiratory System Review Flashcards
What is the function of the respiratory system?
It brings in oxygen and gets rid of carbon dioxide.
Which body system does the respiratory system work in collaboration with?
The circulatory system.
What is the respiratory system made up of?
The nose, the mouth, the trachea, the bronchi, and the lungs.
What does aerobic respiration require?
It requires oxygen to break down glucose (sugar) to make energy (ATP).
Where does cellular respiration take place?
In the mitochondria.
What does cellular respiration consist of?
Glucose (food) + oxygen (air) > carbon dioxide (waste) + water + ATP (cell energy).
What is mechanical respiration?
Breathing at the lungs in humans.
What is the nasal cavity and what is its function?
It is lined with mucus and hair to filter, warm, and moisten incoming air.
What is the pharynx (“throat”) and what is its function?
It is the common path for food and air.
What is the epiglottis and what is its function?
It is the flap of tissue that covers the trachea when you swallow to prevent food from entering the trachea.
What is the larynx (“voice box”) and what is its function?
It contains vocal cords that vibrate and produce sound.
What is laryngitis also known as?
Voice loss.
What is the trachea (“windpipe”) and what is its function?
It is lined with epithelial cells that produce mucus, have cilia, and carry oxygen to bronchi.
What are bronchi (bronchus) and what is their function?
They are 2 large tubes that branch off from the trachea as they carry oxygen to bronchioles (to each lung).
What are lungs and what is their function?
They are two organs that remove oxygen from the air and pass it into your blood.
Which is smaller? Left lung or right lung?
The left lung is smaller than the right lung.
What are bronchioles and what is their function?
They are small tubes of bronchi (some line with cilia and mucus) as they carry oxygen to alveoli.
What is alevoli (air sac) and what is their function?
They are tiny sacs of air surrounded by a network of capillaries, where gas exchange takes place (oxygen > blood and carbon dioxide > alveoli).
What are alveoli surrounded by?
A network of capillaries.
What does alveoli equal?
Semi-permeable membrane.
What does alveoli allow for?
Oxygen and carbon dioxide to diffuse through.
List the order of where oxygen goes in the body.
Alveoli capillaries (lungs) > heart > body cells.
List the order of where carbon dioxide goes in the body.
How did Hitler portray the Jewish people? Why did he do this?
Hitler portrayed the Jewish people with large noses, full lips, and menacing looks. He did this because he hoped that people in Allied countries would be persuaded that Jews should be blamed for the war.
