What is a beadle?
A church worker who serves as an usher and performs various other duties.
What is a synagouge?
A church used by Jewish people for religious study and worship.
What is Kabbalah (or Cabbala)?
A Jewish philosophy based on a mystical interpretation of the Scriptures.
What is Zohar?
The primary text containing writings on Kabbalah.
What is Talmud?
A book that contains the teachings of Jewish law and tradition.
What is a Rabbi?
A scholar and teacher of Jewish law; delivers the sermon at religious service and serves as a spiritual leader in the Jewish community.
What is a Passover?
A Jewish holiday, lasting 7 or 8 days, celebrating the deliverance of the Hebrews from slavery in Egypt.
What is Rosh Hashanah?
The Jewish New Year (occurs in September or October).
What is Yom Kipper?
The Jewish Day of Atonement; occurs nine days after Rosh Hashanah, and involves 25 hours of fasting and intense prayer, and reflecting on one’s sins.
What is Kaddish (or Qaddish)?
A prayer in Aramaic praising God, said as a prayer for the dead.
What does Anti-Semitic mean?
One who discriminates against, or is prejudiced against, Jews.
What is Gestapo?
The secret police force of the German Nazis.
What is the SS (Schutzstaffel)?
An elite military unit of the Nazi party that served as Hitler’s bodyguard and that administered the concentration camps.
What is Sonder-Kommando?
Special work units, compromised of prisoners in concentration camps, who were forced to aid in the killing process (but did not directly kill prisoners).
What is Kapo?
A concentration camp prisoner who was given special privileges in return for supervising prisoner work gangs; Kapos served as a sort of police force within the camps, and were often brutal to their fellow prisoners.
What is a ghetto?
A small area within a large city designated for housing Jews before deportation; ghettos were generally very crowded and Jews who attempted to leave the ghetto were usually shot to death.
What was The Final Solution?
Nazi cover-up name for Hitler’s plan to exterminate all Jews.
What is the Third Reich?
The Nazi dictatorship under Hitler (1933-1945).
