Respiratory System Flashcards
Nasal Septum
- the perpendicular partition separating the nasal cavity into left and right halves, it is comprised of bony, cartilaginous and membranous parts
- cranial cartilaginous part expands laterally, forming the nasal cartilages of each nostril
Larynx
-the musculocartilaginous tube connecting the laryngopharynx with the trachea and containing the vocal cords
Epiglottis
-closes the laryngeal opening during swallowing, protecting the lungs from foreign bodies
Trachea (windpipe)
- Extends from the larynx down the neck into the thorax to the lungs, consisting of cartilaginous rings
- terminates by bifurcating into the right and left primary bronchi above the base of the heart
- cervical part runs from the larynx to he thoracic inlet
- thoracic part continues to the bifurcation
Apex of the Lungs
-the cranial end of the lungs lying in the thoracic inlet
Base of the Lungs
-the caudal end of the lungs resting in the diaphragm
Cardiac Notch
- the opening between lobes of the lungs where the heart sac come in contact with the thoracic wall
- cardiac impression is formed by the heart on the lungs medial surface between the 3rd and 6th rib
Tracheal Bifurcation
-the splitting of the trachea into right and left primary bronchi above the base of the heart, just to the right of the midline
Principle (Primary) Bronchi
-the short, thick segment entering each lungs hilus to divide into lobar bronchi
Arytenoid Cartilage
-help move the vocal folds allowing tension, relaxation, or approximation of these because the vocal folds, being attached to the arytenoids, move along with them.
