Axial
- directional term, closer to the longitudinal axis
- “the inside of the digit is on the axial side”
Abaxial
- directional term, further from the longitudinal axis
- “the outside of the digit is on the abaxial side”
Lateral & Medial Canthi
Ends of the palpebral fissure, the corners where the upper and lower eyelids meet
Upper & Lower Eyelids
- The two moveable fold protecting the rostral surface of the eyeball
- Also known as the Superior and Inferior Palpebrae
Cilia
- eyelashes
- there are sebaceous and ciliary glands associated with the cilia
Conjunctiva
The mucous membrane lining the eyelid and eyeball
Cornual Process
The central conical bony core which grows from the frontal bone of the skull and makes up the structure of the horn
Vibrissae
- whiskers
- tactile hair, long and stiff, can be found anywhere on the face but typically around the mouth
Main Body Hair
Fine, secondary hair with no apocrine glands
Pinna
The outer ear
Philtrum
The midline grove in the upper lip that runs from the top of the lip to the nose
Mucocutaneous Junction
Region of the body which transitions to the skin
Mammary Glands
A modified sweat gland that nourishes young via milk production, consisting of the mamma and the teat
Anal Glands
Paired sac-like structures located between the internal and external anal sphincter muscles
Tail Glands
Located on the dorsal portion of the proximal tail, comprised of numerous large sebaceous and apocrine glands
Equine Foot- Sole
The concave surface that faces the ground between the frog and the wall
Equine Foot- Bars
The extension of the wall from the back (palmar/plantar) aspect of the foot towards the toe located on either side of the frog

The junction between the wall and the sole on the ground surface of the foot, an external indication of sensitive internal structures

The proximal part of the hoof overlaying the coronary corium
