Respiratory System Flashcards
The nasal cavity is followed by what 2 anatomical features before the trachea?
Pharynx
Larynx - voice box
What feature does the trachea have to ensure it constantly allows the flow of 02 into the lungs?
Rings of cartilage - means the trachea can never ‘kink’
Where does gaseous exchange occur?
Alveoli
What do the ribs do during inspiration?
Lift up and out
What do the external intercostal muscles do during inspiration?
Contract, pulling the ribs up and out
What does the diaphragm do during inspiration?
Contracts and flattens
What happens to the ribs during expiration?
Contract down and in
What happens to the internal intercostal muscles during expiration?
Contract pulling the ribs down and in
What happens to the diaphragm during expiration?
Relaxes into a dome shape
During gaseous exchange 02 diffuses from what to what?
From Alveoli to red blood cells - attaching onto the haemoglobin
During gaseous exchange C02 diffuses from what to what?
From red blood cells to alveoli in the lungs so it can be breathed out
Gases diffuse from what concentration to what concentration????
Gases diffuse from a high concentration area to low so 02 in the lungs diffuses to the red blood cells as the concentration of 02 in the lungs is high whereas the concentration of 02 on the red blood cell would be low.
What does Tidal Volume mean?
Volume of air breathed in and out in 1 breathe
What is Frequency / Breathing Rate?
Amount of breaths in a minute
What is Minute Ventilation?
TV x F - tidal volume x frequency / breathing rate = amount of air breathed in and out in a minute
