respiratory system Flashcards
Nostrils
Air flows in/out during inhalation/exhalation.
Nasal cavity
Warms and moistens air.
Hairs filter out unwanted particles.
Pharynx
The throat.
larynx
The voice box.
Air flows through, producing sound.
Trachea
Cartilage tube that carries air to the lungs.
Lung
Left lung is made of two lobes and has an indentation for the heart.
Right lung is made of three lobes and is bigger than the left.
Bronchi
The trachea breaks into two bronchi, each one supplying a lung.
Bronchioles
Smaller branches of each bronchi.
Alveoli
Microscopic sacs, one cell thick.
Site of gas exchange.
diaphragm
Flat, sheet like muscle.
Contracts during inspiration and relaxes during expiration
inspiration
The diaphragm contracts and lung volume expands causing air from the surroundings to flow into the lungs.
expiration
The diaphragm relaxes and lung volume decreases causing air from the lungs to flow out to the surroundings.
Gas exchange
After inspiration the alveoli are rich in oxygen. This oxygen needs to diffuse into the blood so that cellular respiration can occur.
Gas exchange
After cellular respiration the blood is rich in carbon dioxide. This carbon dioxide needs to diffuse out of the blood and into the alveoli so it can be exhaled out of the body.
Gas exchange
The alveoli are only one cell thick and are surrounded by capillaries (blood vessels).
This allows gases to easily move from one to the other.
