function
The function of the reproduction systems is to unite a sperm cell (from the male) and egg (from the female) so a baby can be conceived, develop and born.
When a sperm combines with an egg it is called fertilisation
Sexual intercourse
The sperm and egg unite during sexual intercourse when the male puts his penis in the females vagina.
After ejaculation, the sperm is carried in semen towards the egg in the female reproductive system
testes
Site of sperm production.
Epididymis
Site of sperm storage.
Vas deferens
Transports sperm to the urethra.
prostate
Secretes an alkaline fluid that is a component of semen.
Seminal vesicles
Secretes an sugary fluid that is a component of semen.
Bulbourethral glands
Secretes a mucous that is a component of semen.
urethra
Carries semen and urine out of the body.
penis
Male reproductive organ.
Fallopian tube
The site of fertilisation.
ovary
The site of egg production.
uterus
A muscular organ where the foetus (unborn baby) grows.
cervix
The narrow neck of the uterus.
vagina
Forms part of the birth canal during labour.
implantation
After the egg is fertilised by a sperm in the fallopian it becomes a zygote.
It takes 6 days to travel into the uterus where it has by then grown into an embryo.
It implants into the wall of the uterus and takes about 9 months to develop into a fully formed baby.
