Respiratory System Flashcards
Main points about the lung
The main organ responsible for gas exchange in humans
Divided in left and right
What is the respiratory system
How humans exhale carbon dioxide
Responsible for gas exchange
How humans inhale oxygen and absorbs it by reducing blood cells
How does the respiratory system work
1) oxygen is inhaled through the nasal cavity
2) oxygen travels down the pharynx, larynx and trachea
3) goes in either left or right lungs via the bronchi tubes which are inside the lung
4) the bronchus then splits into smaller tubes called bronchioles
5) bronchioles splits into smaller tubes called alveolar sacs
6) the diaphragm helps fill the lungs with oxygen and expel the air through the oral cavity
What is the nasal cavity and its features
Is lined with hairs and mucus to filter dust and trap unwanted materials
Is warm and mist to condition air temp for lungs
What is the alveolus
Is the site of gas exchange which is how oxygen and carbon dioxide enter and exit the lungs
How does gas exchange happen in the alveolar
Deoxygenated blood which is high concentration of carbon dioxide and low concentration of oxygen. The carbon dioxide diffuses in the alveolar sac and then is a low concentration of carbon dioxide.
Oxygen enters the lungs and diffuses the deoxygenated blood and the cells absorbs oxygen and carries to the heart
How are the alveoli adapted for gas exchange
Large surface area
Vey thin lining one cell thick
Moist lining allows to dissolve and diffuse
Good supply of blood
Good ventilation of breathing
What is gas exchange
Oxygen and carbon dioxide are constantly supplied and removed
Diffusion
- there is a difference in concentration between area during gas exchange
- oxygen moves form high concentration to red blood cells with low concentration
- gas molecules will move back in forth to even out the ratio of molecules on both side
