RESPIRATORY SYSTEM Flashcards
What are the 8 functions of the Respiratory System?
- Gas Exchange
- Oxygen Transport
- Carbon Dioxide Removal
- pH removal
- Speech and vocalization
- Immune defense
- Thermoregulation
- Sense of smell
What are the Upper Respiratory Tract
Nose/Nasal Activity
Pharynx (Throat)
Larynx (Voice box)
What is the function of the Nose or Nasal cavity?
Warms, moistens, and filters air as it is inhaled
What is the function of the Pharynx?
Passageway for air, leads to Trachea
What is the function of the Larynx?
The voice box, where vocal chords are located
What are the Lower Respiratory Tract?
Trachea (Windpipe)
Bronchi
Bronchioles
Alveoli
Lungs
What is the function of the Trachea?
It keeps the windpipe “open.” Trachea is lined with fine hairs called Cilia which filter air before it reaches the lungs.
What is the function of the Bronchi?
These are two branches at the end of the trachea, each lead to a lung.
What is the function of the Bronchioles?
A network of smaller branches leading from the bronchi into the lung tissue and ultimately to air sacs.
What is the function of the Alveoli?
The functional respiratory units in the lung where gases are exchanged
How does gas exchange between the blood and the alveoli?
The four steps of gas exchange are ventilation, pulmonary gas exchange, gas transport, and peripheral gas exchange. These processes describe how gas is inhaled, exhaled, exchanged at the alveoli, transported through the blood, and again diffused across cellular membranes in body tissues.
What happened when you breathe in?
When you breathe in, or inhale, your diaphragm contracts and moves downward. This increases the space in your chest cavity, and your lungs expand into it. The muscles between your ribs also help enlarge the chest cavity. They contract to pull your rib cage both upward and outward when you inhale.
What are the respiratory disorders?
- Tonsillitis
- Laryngitis
- Common cold
- Bronchitis
- Pneumonia
- Emphysema
- Cystic Fibrosis
- Asthma
- Lung Cancer
