Respiratory system Flashcards
What part of the respiratory process is air cleaned, warmed and humfied?
nasal cavity
During the process of inspiration, what pressures are reached in the lungs and in the pleural cavity?
The lungs will reach -1mmHg
In the pleural cavity it will reach to -6mmHg
Explain Transpulmonary pressure.
It is the pressure difference between intrapulmonary pressure Ppul and Intrapleural pressure Pip. It is always positive and prevents the lungs from collapsing
What will happen if the Pip will be equal to Ppul?
Pip is the pressure in the pleural cavity it must be negative for the lungs to maintain their shape and not to collapses.
What is the correct pathway for the passage of an oxygen molecule into the body from the nose and ending at the alveoli?
pharynx, larynx, trachea, bronchi, then bronchioles
Smoking inhibits and ultimately destroys cilia. What function of respiration would be most likely affect by smoking?
Cilia help move mucus containing dust, bacteria, etc.. away from the lungs back to the throat to be swallowed this protects the lungs from infections and irritations.
Distinguish between external and internal respiration.
External respiration
- O2 from the lungs to the blood
- CO2 blood to the lungs
Internal respiration
- O2 from blood to the tissue cells
- CO2 tissue cells to the blood
What is the Pressure in the pulmonary arteries for oxygen and carbon dioxide?
PO2=40mmHg
PCO2= 45mmHg
In the pulmonary veins what is the pressure of oxygen?
100mmHg
Pressure in the alveoli of lungs
O2= 104 mmHg
CO2= 40mmHg
Trachea is supported by which type of Cartilage and how is it useful?
Hyaline cartilage, it supports and keeps the trachea from collapsing
what transports oxygen in red blood cells?
hemoglobin
Which gas is transported from tissue cells to the blood and which method of transportation is most common for this?
Gas CO2
Bicarbonate ion in plasma
What is meant by pulmonary ventilation?
It is the process of breathing air into and out the lungs
